Organisation:
Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Dr. Natalio D. Wheatley is hosting The Bahamas' Minister of Foreign Affairs, Honourable Frederick A. Mitchell Jr., for a series of high-level discussions on constitutional development, regional cooperation and strengthening relations between the two jurisdictions.
Minister Mitchell arrived in the Territory on Wednesday, 1 July, for a series of engagements with government officials, constitutional negotiators and civil society representatives.
The discussions have focused on constitutional development, democratic governance and citizen participation, with participants exchanging perspectives on the experiences of small island states and the importance of strong institutions, public engagement and effective leadership in advancing national development.
Regional cooperation has also featured prominently, with discussions exploring the role of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in addressing shared challenges and advancing opportunities for member states and associate members. Other topics included labour mobility, immigration, education, economic resilience, foreign service, protocol, regional security and the shared opportunities and challenges facing small island developing states.
The meetings have also examined opportunities to strengthen collaboration between The Virgin Islands and The Bahamas, including continued dialogue on matters of mutual interest and the potential development of a Memorandum of Understanding to support future cooperation.
Premier Wheatley said: “The Caribbean is strongest when we stand together. It is an honour to host Minister Mitchell and to continue building on the longstanding friendship between The Virgin Islands and The Bahamas. Through dialogue, cooperation and the sharing of ideas and experiences, we can strengthen our institutions, advance our common interests and deliver tangible benefits for the people we serve. That spirit of collaboration is one that I remain deeply committed to fostering, both within our region and beyond."
The itinerary for the visit of Honourable Frederick A. Mitchell Jr. includes meetings with Ministers of Government, members of the Constitutional Negotiating Committee, and representatives of civil society including the BVI Christian Council, Rotary Clubs, the Alzheimer's Association, Police Welfare Association and The Virgin Islands Communal Association.
