Press Release
Organisation:
The BVI Asia Abroad Scholarship Programme, led by the BVI Hong Kong Office, recently conducted a series of informational sessions for public and private school students across the Virgin Islands.
The sessions were designed to enlighten students and parents about the opportunities available through the BVI Asia Abroad Scholarships Programme by the Government of the Virgin Islands. Through this Scholarship Programme, Virgin Islanders are afforded the opportunity to study abroad in Asia in the modern cities of Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, and Taiwan.
Sessions were held with students of the Elmore Stoutt High School, Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies, Claudia Creque Educational Center (Anegada), and St. George’s Secondary School.
Additionally, the BVI Hong Kong Office hosted a Webinar and Pop-Up informational session for the general public. Sessions were conducted by Political Economy Officer Ms. Kyla Forbes.
Ms. Forbes stated, “It was truly an extraordinary experience engaging with the next generation. Speaking with our students has left me energised and deeply optimistic about the future of the Virgin Islands. They are driven by bold aspirations and have the capability to accomplish incredible things. Having the opportunity to interact with these students assured me that our students are ready for the world, and the world is ready to receive them. This is why I am proud to assist in the administration of the BVI-Asia Abroad Scholarship Programme, which presents students with the opportunity to pursue and advance their dreams in one of the most dynamic regions of the world!”
Presently, the programme has nine (9) students, and the office aims to increase the enrollment to 20 students for the 2026/2027 academic year.
Director of the BVI Hong Kong Office, Dr. Ricardo Wheatley, stated, “The BVI Asia Abroad Scholarship programme was established in 2020 to provide Virgin Islanders with opportunities to study in Asia at partner universities. The goal is to foster cross-cultural exchange, broaden academic horizons, and equip Virgin Islanders with the expertise needed to contribute to the Territory's sustainable development upon their return.
The Asia Study Abroad Scholarship Programme is a three-way partnership between the Government of the Virgin Islands, elite Universities in Asia, and the private sector. The programme is administered by the BVI's Representative Office in Hong Kong, which serves as a guide and liaison for Virgin Islanders studying in the region.
Virgin Islanders can pursue Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral Degree studies in a wide variety of areas that are not only in demand but will serve the territory of the Virgin Islands such as: Hospitality & Tourism, Information Technology, Engineering, Media & Communications, Marine/Maritime Studies, Public Health and Medical Fields, Nursing, Education, Agriculture & Fisheries, Finance/Financial Services, Public Administration/Public Policy, Diplomacy and more.
