The Ministry of Health and Social Development is advising the public that the fire at the Virgin Gorda Dumpsite has been successfully contained and the facility has reopened for normal operations.

The Department of Waste Management, working in collaboration with the Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Service, the BVI Airports Authority, the Water and Sewerage Department, and local water truck operators, responded swiftly to the incident to suppress the fire and secure the site.

While the fire has been extinguished, residents are advised that some residual smoke remains in the area. The smoke is continuing to dissipate however, members of the public are encouraged to limit the amount of time spent at the dumpsite until conditions fully improve.

The Ministry thanks the responding agencies for their coordinated efforts and extends its appreciation to the Virgin Gorda community for its patience, cooperation, and understanding throughout the response.

The Department of Waste Management will continue to monitor conditions at the site and provide additional updates should they become necessary.
