Internal Audit Department Observes Internal Audit Month in May

The Internal Audit Department observes Internal Audit Month under the theme “Internal Audit in Focus:  Shifting the Narrative, Reset, Renew, Rebuild.

The Internal Audit Department is an intergrated audit function within the Government of the Virgin Islands, responsible for evaluating the effectiveness of internal controls, risk management, and governance processes across ministries and departments.

              Financial Secretary, Mr. Jeremiah Frett says that he is pleased to see this critical Government Department observe the month of activities, educating the Virgin Islands community of its role.

              He said, “I am pleased to see the month of activities take place, as a reminder of the critical role the department has which is to ensure that the public service is establishing and maintaining control of public resources in a manner which is accountable, efficient, effective and above all, ethical”.

              The month  will highlight activities such as, an Open House Day, where the public service community will have an opportunity to speak with the staff of the department, a series of “Did You Know” Posts sharing fun facts and teachable opportunities, Meet the team video, a few school presentations just to name a few.

              Meanwhile Director of Internal Audit Mrs. Dorea T. Maduro Corea says that the team from IAD and its Board are  excited about the month of activities and look forward for the opportunity to interact with colleagues from the wider public service and the rest of the Virgin Islands community.

              She said, “My team and I are pleased to see this month of activities get off the ground.  We cannot wait to showcase what the departments has instore.  Above all we want to speak about what we do, so persons have an understanding of our function and begin to welcome and appreciate our services.  While promoting the work of the department, we want to attract the next generation of Internal Auditors, as one of the things we want to achieve through this campaign, is to get suitable persons into thinking about Internal Audit as a Career of Choice”.

The Internal Audit Department, has been in existence as a Unit since 1991, and was formally created as a Department with the passage of the Internal Audit Act, 2011. The Department was given a broad mandate to provide assurance and consulting services to the Public Authorities as defined by the Act.

The Department is guided by its vision to “be an innovative driver of positive change while striving to be the premier internal audit function in the Government of the Virgin Islands.”
