Press Release
Organisation:
The Department of Waste Management is notifying the public of a halt in the tagging and removal of derelict vehicles across the Territory until further notice.
Deputy Director Mr. Levi Benjamin said, “Until we can re-instate our derelict removal services, we would like to encourage the community and wrecker services to cease and refrain from transporting derelict vehicles to the Havers Site.”
Mr. Benjamin said the interruption to the derelict removal and storage services is due to delays with exportation and the department’s pursuit to identify a long-term storage site that aligns with the Territory’s social and environmental requirements.
“We are currently in the middle of the tender process to source the land necessary which will enable us to resume operations,” Mr. Benjamin said, adding, “We are also focusing our efforts on getting the already stockpiled derelicts out of the Territory. This will enable us to clean up and clear the current site in preparation to moving to the new site.”
The Deputy Director explained that until the department is able to fully transfer its operations to the proposed site, he is advising the public to refrain from taking derelicts to the Havers site until services are fully re-instated.
The department continues to ask for the public’s patience until this matter is resolved and regrets any inconvenience caused.
The Ministry of Health and Social Development remains committed to protecting and promoting the health and social well-being of the people of the Virgin Islands.
